Adult & Geriatric Psychiatry · Washington State

Care for adults and older adults — and for their loved ones.

Susan Wetstone, MD — Dr. Susie — cares for most psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorders, and psychotic disorders. Her special interests are reducing dementia risk, slowing cognitive decline, and caring for those with cognitive concerns, cognitive impairment, or dementia — and for their families.

She offers psychiatric and cognitive evaluations, psychotherapy, medication management, and help with planning for life with cognitive change.

Cognitive evaluation

A cognitive evaluation can include cognitive testing, a detailed history, information from family members, laboratory work, brain imaging, and coordination with your other doctors.

A cognitive evaluation can help sort out where a change is coming from. New anxiety or irritability, a change in mood, missed appointments or unpaid bills — these can arise from a medical or psychiatric condition, from a medication, or from an early change in cognition. From the outside they look much alike. Many of these causes are treatable, and all of them are worth identifying.

Cognitive change is often accompanied by difficulty recognizing the change itself, which is why the first call so often comes from a family member — and why it is worth making.

An evaluation can also establish a baseline, for someone who would like to protect their cognitive health or who has a family history of dementia and wants to reduce their risk.

About Dr. Susie

After fifteen years practicing anesthesiology — which gave her a deep understanding of how bodies and medications work — she retrained in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry at the University of Washington, because the pain she most wanted to treat was the kind anesthesia couldn't reach, and because she wanted to know her patients.
